The Magic Pudding

This musical play for young people was a theatrical adaptation of Norman Lindsay’s famous larrikin tale.

“It’s a privilege to be a designer for this production because Norman Lindsay’s illustrations are so iconic. I see my job as a translator as well as a designer.” Drawing inspiration from Lindsay’s original work, Feller said she’d tried to “keep to the spirit of the illustrations”. Whether it was hand-painting the bright red checks on the koala’s trousers or tailoring pantaloons for the penguin, the process of sculpting humans to animal shapes was a tricky task.

Feller said she and director Margie McCrae wanted to highlight the theatrics of the play by reinforcing the shapes and colours of costumes. “We wanted to make it highly theatrical…the costumes have a circus-vaudeville feel.”

“Overall the production looked gorgeous. There was a touch of shadow puppetry, a clever set and authentic costumes which you could imagine had leapt from the pages of the childern’s classic, first published in 1918.”
