Packing Room 8
A devised dance work: each performer was asked to choose a character from a painting from any period of art history.
Where does a Renaissance Christ, Surrealist woman made of bricks, mer-man, a 1940s factory worker, a child with a pregnancy, man with tree roots for legs and woman with butterflies for eyes meet and dance together?!… Perhaps when touring galleries as an exhibition…the setting of a packing room was chosen and this is where this magic coming-to-life of these characters takes place.
Each performer began concealed in a yellow packing crate (generously donated by National Gallery of Australia) of differing sizes and was revealed in a unique way; lids lifted clear off the box and remained suspended, some simply hinged open and most exciting was a yellow paper piece that was exploded through by the ever nimble Aljin Abella!
