Hornsby : Retirement Village

“The aim of CHRV is to prepare residents to be able to fulfil their destiny in life and develop the courage and trust to die; to do both with dignity”.

The development will include 30 independent living units, a doubling of the existing high care hostel and a central community centre to serve as the heart of the village with direct access from the public domain complete with a cafe and chapel.

Geothe’s notion of ‘Wahlverwandtschaft’ (Elective Affinity) can best be employed through layering public and private space throughout the Village.

The overall Village should be opened up to Mildred Avenue with through site links. The use of covered walkways through the site may give the Village an institutional feel and could be avoided.

“Summer is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces up, snow is exhilarating; there is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.”
John Ruskin

The landscaping will be most characterised by the existing mature turpentine trees on the site. The additional planting should have the added seasonal variation and possibly be exotic types. The Village should be a combination of open areas and darker dappled or solid shade. An urban habitat of native birds can be encouraged by planting flowering plants.
